"Good art is never made in a vacuum" - Amy Mcnee

'Plays for Youth' has launched!

The life of a play is a transient one, a dramatic venture that fades into memory when the lights go out. The plays written for youths are even more short-lived and are witnessed by lesser crowds, losing visibility despite the weight of their themes and relevance. My fervent belief that school plays should continue to live on was the driving force behind this project.

'Plays for Youth' was launched in March 2025 at the National Library. Published by Epigram Books and written by members of the Singapore Drama Educators Association (SDEA), this collection of school plays is a resourceful tool in the drama classroom, especially for those looking for ensemble work, local narratives and contemporary themes. This entire process has been a shared labour of love, having first conceived the idea back in 2023, assembling a dedicated team from SDEA (shout out to Jeffrey Tan, Isabella Lim, Adeeb Fazah, Cathy Kee), overseeing administrative matters as Project Lead and working tirelessly towards its final production. As I have shared in my opening speech during the launch, I do not agree with the general view that plays are meant to be produced and not published. Not every child has access to watching a play, and this opinion stems from a personal place given that my first and multiple encounters with plays were through my schools, and not my parents who never consumed theatre. Ultimately, publishing plays and bringing them into the classroom allows for more students to access theatre. This is why I am deeply indebted to our publisher, Edmund Wee, for believing in this project and offering his full support. Thank you so much for solidifying and preserving the quiet contributions of drama educators! I am also grateful to Yuka, our incredible editor, for her meticulous eye, expertise and thoughtful guidance, seeing us through each stage of the publishing process.

The launch featured a live reading by a talented group from Buds Youth Theatre who performed excerpts from all six plays. This includes my play, @iamelodie, which was devised in part with the Tanjong Katong Girls' School drama club and originally conceptualised and directed by Sahirrah Safit. Thank you to all the talented playwrights (Verena Tay, Lewin Bernard, Othman M. Yusof, Regina Chua) and panellists (including our guest, Jean Tay, and moderator Jeffrey Tan) for your insights during our discussion, especially on the rewards and challenges of working with youths.

As a playwright-educator, I am always in awe at how much students grow by the end of the playwriting modules that I teach. Students who have never written a play emerge at the end with pages of subtext and stagecraft wielded so expertly at such a young age! Recently my students were asking if they can perform their pieces even though their showcase is in the following year. This goes to show just how much the craft ignites their imagination. I am glad I can share the power of theatre and playwriting with the next generation.

It is my hope that more students can be exposed to theatre and playwriting- not just those in specialised courses. If you're an educator, I hope you can give this book a chance and share it with your students. If you're a young person curious to learn about playwriting and theatre, I hope these plays will inspire you to go on your own theatrical adventures.

இயற்கை நிமித்தம்: சங்க இலக்கியத்தில் இயற்கையின் குரல்
Echoes of the Ancient: Nature's Influence in Sangam Literature

Nature has a deep connection with sangam literature, where, beyond serving as a mere backdrop, it has itself been a central character around which narratives revolve. How have contemporary writers and artists reinterpreted elements of these ancient Tamil texts and particularly their nature motifs into their own creative works? Enjoy the rich traditions of sangam poetry with a blend of music in this panel discussion with a live music station."

What a thrill it was to moderate a Tamil panel at this year's Singapore Writers Festival! I'm thankful to the Singapore Writers Festival team for picking up the proposal I had sent during the open call. We unpacked the role of nature in ancient Sangam poetry, how Sangam continues to be reinvented by contemporary poets and artists, and the relevance of Sangam literature today, including its connections with music. I would like to extend my gratitude to panellists Dr Manivannan Murugesan, Banu Suresh and Niranjan Pandian (who featured his flute at a live music station during the panel!) and Mr Ilango Krishnan, the award-winning lyricist for the blockbuster movies, Ponniyin Selvan 1 and 2! A big shout out to Ayilisha from the Arts House/SWF team for her support and efforts in ensuring the panel ran smoothly. I am still buzzing from the rich conversations and interesting discoveries, and I look forward to delving deeper into these ancient verses from a fresher perspective.

Having led the organizing committee for the Singapore Drama Educators Association's Connections this year, I have had the privilege of collaborating with an incredible team to bring this event to life. We curated a lineup of distinguished speakers and industry professionals who shared their insights on the recently launched Skills Future framework, offered expert advice on career pathways and drew from their personal experiences.

Our goal was to provide a platform for arts educators to explore various avenues for professional growth, exchange ideas, and network with peers in the field. We also had booths from Institutes of Higher Learning, to support and aid participants on steps to take to upskill.

Thank you for the wonderful turnout and for sharing your thoughts and visions for the sector!

Agam Theatre Forum - The Wright Voice

18/12/2022

What does it mean to be a brown playwright in a diverse, changing world? In this instalment of Nadagavaathi, I was invited by Agam Theatre to share about my playwriting journey and the trials and tribulations I have faced in the last 8 years. I am honoured that I got the chance to share the stage with Dr Elavazhagan and Dr Umayal, both esteemed playwrights in the local Tamil industry! I remember feeling very nervous that day and both of them were very encouraging and made me feel at ease. They had a lot of illuminating thoughts to share and I learnt so much!

Thank you, Ganesh Subramaniam and Agam Theatre, for this opportunity and for working hard to put this together. I appreciate the effort to make this content accessible as a resource material for students or anyone doing research on the Singapore Indian theatre scene.

ITI Theatre Forum

"What are the challenges faced by theatre companies and artists as we move beyond SG50?
Are theatre-makers now short-lived or just adaptably amorphous?
How does the individual artist navigate the new landscape of collectives vs companies, pop-up platforms and projects vs full-time positions?
Like every multi-hyphenate out there today, is talent now expected to be multi-talented?
Importantly, how does one ensure sustainability of your practice over years and decades, as the arts fight for attention from more avenues?

This forum invites some of today’s most exciting theatre-makers to share their thoughts, their motivations, their anxieties - as they respond to the ecology of funding and market today.

Hear from: Aswani Aswath, Grace Kalaiselvi, Jasdeep Singh Gill, Nabilah Said, Neo Hai Bin, Tan Liting"
